The Enemy Within…
Ever wondered why you never seem to progress things as much as you would like or why you give up before you even get started?
It’s easy to find external reasons for why this happens, but how often do we look within and take ownership…
Have you ever heard:
Whether you believe you can or can’t you are right - Henry Ford
I often fall into the trap that is my own mind. In fact only today, I was talking to my powerlifting coach and she said ‘remember what you practice with your clients… I know how good you can be, you just need to start believing it too!’. She’s right (although I don’t like to admit it - haha). I have so much self belief in almost everything that I do, but when it comes to lifting, I am my worst enemy.
It is my limiting belief of ‘I am not strong enough’ that holds me back at times. It something that I am focusing on for these next 10 weeks before my next competition.
So what are limiting beliefs…
They are thoughts and opinions that one believes to be absolutely true. They are not always known to the person and often hidden within their subconscious. As the title suggested limiting beliefs often have a negative impact on one’s life by holding them back.
Most limiting beliefs are developed through experiences during childhood. When you are a child, your brain is literally working as a sponge, absorbing all surroundings, registering both good and bad behaviours.
Common limiting beliefs are:
I am unlovable
I am undeserving
I am worthless
I am a horrible person
I am not good enough
Can you change your beliefs…
Absolutely! Firstly you have to remember that awareness always precedes change. So naturally you first have to allow yourself to become aware of your limiting beliefs that are impacting your life.
Then it takes a choice…
If you are to eliminate a belief you have held within for years, you have to make the commitment to do so. Ask yourself this:
How is it impacting your life now?
What would it mean for you if you no longer held that belief?
How committed are you to changing it?
As part of my NLP practices, I work through a process known as a belief sub-modality change to help clients with this process. I had the pleasure of having a belief change done on me with the incredible Calvin Coyles and I can honestly it change my life. We worked through a belief that had been negatively impacting all areas of my life for most of my life. And yes… it does sometimes creep back in occasionally but it is no longer a core belief for me. So I am armed with the tools to quickly move on from it and proceed with my new, far stronger beliefs about myself.
Don’t let the enemy within, win the war.
I hope this has been thought provoking for you and I would be happy to explain more about my experiences with limiting beliefs with you anytime, just reach out!
